Vayots Dzor Province is an entire world surrounded by the natural barriers of high mountains and watershed ridges one of the most concentrated and moving expressions of Armenian nature. Volcanic forces, earthquakes, the Arpa River, and its tributaries have carved, shaped, and formed this unique landscape over decades, creating mountain ranges and peaks, mysterious gorges and passes, plateaus and meadows. Natural forests cover 5.7% of the province’s territory, supporting rich plant and animal life.
What to See
Since ancient times, Vayots Dzor has been an inseparable part of Armenian statehood. It was first mentioned in historical records by the father of Armenian historiography, Movses Khorenatsi. However, the province’s most eloquent testimonies are found not in books, but beneath the soil. In Areni’s “Birds’ Cave,” the oldest known leather shoe discovered to date was found, while the wine jars unearthed at the same site may be evidence of the oldest known winemaking cycle in the world.

On the first Saturday of October, Areni transforms. People’s spirits are filled with wine, their eyes shine, and their faces are full of smiles. How to Get There
There are several convenient ways to reach Vayots Dzor Province (provincial center: Yeghegnadzor) from Yerevan, mainly via the Yerevan–Yeraskh–Goris (M2) highway.
The main options are:
By Car (Private Transport): The journey from Yerevan to Vayots Dzor takes approximately 2–3 hours. The route passes through Ararat Province (the towns of Vedi and Ararat), then continues through Yeraskh, Zangakatun, Chiva, and Yeghegnadzor.
By Minibus: Minibuses depart from Yerevan’s Central Railway Station (known as “Sasuntsi Davit” Station) and reach Yeghegnadzor in about 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Private Passenger Transport: Private minibuses (for example, Yerevan–Vaik) also operate, departing in the morning hours (for example, between 09:00 and 09:30).
When to Visit
Vayots Dzor Province can be visited at any time of the year, as each season has its own unique beauty and atmosphere.
April to June is the most charming period of nature’s awakening. Mountain meadows and gorges are covered with flowers, the air becomes light and fresh, and the weather is ideal both for hiking and for visiting monasteries and fortresses. The red cliffs of Noravank are particularly impressive during this season. It is one of the best times for those who wish to spend entire days in nature and discover the province’s attractions.
In summer, Vayots Dzor offers excellent opportunities to enjoy nature and active recreation. The province is known for its hiking routes rich in beautiful landscapes. This season is especially suitable for discovering the Jermuk Waterfall and Jermuk’s mineral waters, as well as walking along the banks of the Arpa River.
For many, autumn is considered the most beautiful season to visit Vayots Dzor. Nature is covered in golden and reddish hues, vineyards fill with the scent of the harvest, and the air becomes mild and pleasant. In October, in addition to exploring the province’s historical and cultural monuments, visitors can participate in the Areni Wine Festival, tasting a variety of local wines and becoming acquainted with Armenian winemaking traditions.

By the way, if you are traveling here, here is a practical tip: in Armenia, it is still often necessary to carry cash. Many places, especially in the regions, operate on a cash-only basis. Although there are restaurants and hotels that accept card or online payments, they are not very common. Museums also generally require cash, and remember that almost all museums are closed on Mondays.
