Gegharkunik Province

Why Visit Gegharkunik

Gegharkunik is the largest province in Armenia, and this is not merely a geographical fact but an invitation for travelers into a diverse and inexhaustible world. Its territory is so vast that the provinces of Ararat, Armavir, and Kotayk could comfortably fit within its borders. You can feel this scale on the road, the sky and the horizon seem wider here.

What to See

About one quarter of the province’s entire territory is covered by the mirror-like waters of Lake Sevan. The largest lake in the Caucasus is not only a tourist attraction; it is the foundation of the province’s entire watershed basin, a climate regulator, and a source of life. Spread out at an altitude of 1,900 meters above sea level, this lake is the largest freshwater lake in the Caucasus and the most recognizable face of Armenia.

What to Do

Gegharkunik possesses such historical depth that even measuring it in terms of time can be dizzying. On the coastal lands freed from the waters of the lake, tombs of people buried five thousand years ago have been discovered. Settlements, fortresses, and castles, as well as cuneiform inscriptions the most direct traces of pre-Urartian and Urartian civilizations in Armenia have been preserved here.

The Cyclopean fortresses are particularly impressive. Their walls, built from enormous uncut stones, have stood for millennia without lime or cement and still tell the story of the strength and skill of their builders.

The petroglyphs are a chapter of their own. Carved into the rocks of the Geghama Mountains, these images are the silent yet expressive story of the lives, hunts, and rituals of early human tribes.

Important

By the way, if you are traveling here, here is a practical tip: in Armenia, it is still often necessary to carry cash. Many places, especially in the regions, operate on a cash-only basis. Although there are restaurants and hotels that accept card or online payments, they are not very common. Museums also generally require cash, and remember that almost all museums are closed on Mondays.
