Close to the Mountains: Yeranos
Many people believe that wealth consists only of money and material possessions. In reality, however, true wealth is much closer than we imagine. Sunrises, sunsets, the gentle whisper of the wind, the sweet rustling of leaves, the fresh scent of the earth after the rain—these are truly unique moments, priceless gifts that nature offers us every day.
Climbing Mount Yeranos had been on my list of goals for the year, written in bold letters, and eventually every road led me there. The Yeranos Ridge is one of the branches of the Geghama Volcanic Highlands. It stretches along the left bank of the Azat River toward the Ararat Plain. Near the center of the ridge rises Mount Yeranos, reaching an elevation of 1,823.7 meters above sea level.
We began our ascent from Armenia’s Ararat Province. Sometimes, in one moment you have nothing, and in the next, you have more than you could ever embrace. That was exactly how I felt during this hike, as breathtaking scenery accompanied us with every step. Mount Ararat dominated the horizon ahead, the Yerakh Mountains stretched to the east, the Voghjaberd Ridge lay to the west, and below us shimmered the tranquil waters of the Azat Reservoir.
Standing on the summit of Yeranos and looking around, I realized how mistaken we are to believe that human beings are the most powerful creatures on Earth. Perhaps we invented this myth to satisfy our own ego. Nature is the true force of power. It inspires, humbles, and reminds us of our place in the world.
The hike to Yeranos exceeded every expectation I had. We were fortunate to have an excellent group and exceptional guides who remained attentive and vigilant throughout the journey. After all, others follow the same path they take, leaving no room for mistakes. Yet alongside their professionalism, they never forgot to brighten the hike with clever jokes and warm humor, keeping everyone’s spirits high and the team motivated until the very end.
Regardless of the weather, nature always amazes those who are willing to see its beauty. All it asks is that we step away from the worries of everyday life for a while. Once we do, what we discover reaches far beyond our eyes—it finds its way into our consciousness. Nature is an entire universe, filled with its own laws, mysteries, and miracles.
With every step of the hike, the landscape changed, constantly revealing new and captivating views. It was here that I understood once again that nature is life’s greatest treasure. Take a deep breath and remember that wealth has little to do with money, social status, or prestige. True wealth lies in the profound spiritual connection and the extraordinary sense of beauty that only nature can offer.
As you travel through Armenia’s remarkable landscapes, you will discover some of the most spectacular scenery on the planet. And as for me, my journey of exploration continues.
