Ararat Province

Why Visit Ararat

Ararat Province is located in the southwestern part of Armenia and borders Kotayk Province, Yerevan, and Armavir, while in the south it is separated from Turkey by the Araks River and extends to the border with Nakhichevan.

The southeastern part of the Ararat Plain lies within the province, stretching approximately 6–13 km in width, while the Yeranos Mountain Range extends along its northern section. The province’s boundaries also follow the Azat River and its tributary, the Goght River, both of which play an important role in shaping the region’s geography.

What to See

Ararat Province is rich in historical and cultural monuments, ranging from ancient cities to medieval monasteries and fortresses.

The historic cities of Artashat and Dvin, among Armenia’s most important historical centers, are located here, along with numerous monastic complexes that have served as centers of both spiritual and cultural life for centuries. Khor Virap, one of the symbols of Christianity, is also located in this province. It is directly connected to the story of Saint Gregory the Illuminator, who was imprisoned for many years in the underground pit here before Armenia adopted Christianity as its state religion.

This site serves as a reminder not only of the triumph of faith but also of the turning point when Armenia became the first Christian nation in the world.

If you are a nature lover, Khosrov Forest State Reserve is one of those rare places that can truly be called one of the country’s treasures. It is not simply a protected area but an entire world rich in biodiversity, ancient history, and the untouched beauty of wildlife. The reserve offers designated routes that allow visitors to discover all the beauty of this remarkable place.

A more relaxed and scenic option is the train, which departs from Sasuntsi Davit Railway Station. The journey takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.

If you prefer freedom and speed, you can reach either Artashat or Khor Virap Monastery by car or taxi in just 30–40 minutes via the M2 highway. A taxi is one of the most convenient options, especially if you wish to travel quickly and without stops.

When to Visit

The best time to visit Ararat Province is spring and early autumn, when nature and weather create the most pleasant conditions for travel.

In spring (April–May), the province turns into a colorful fairy tale. Blooming apricot trees cover the fields with soft pink shades, while Mount Ararat remains snow-capped, creating a striking contrast. Temperatures are mild, around 12–25°C, making this season ideal for long walks and exploring attractions.

In summer (June–August), temperatures on the Ararat Plain can reach 40°C and above, but it is also the most delicious time of the year, as sun-ripened fruits begin to mature—especially apricots, which are a must-try here.

In early autumn (September–October), the weather once again becomes pleasant and balanced. This is harvest season, when the province fills with activity and energy, and for wine lovers it marks the beginning of the best period for discovery.

Every season has its own beauty, but if you want to see Ararat Province in its most impressive colors, choose spring or early autumn.

Important

Remember that when traveling in Armenia, it is advisable to carry cash. There are still places that operate on a cash-only basis.

Of course, there are restaurants and hotels that offer online payment systems, but they are relatively few. Museums also generally require cash, and remember that almost all museums are closed on Mondays.
