characteristics. For such a journey, we turn to the <strong data-start=\"705\" data-end=\"733\">City Research Center NGO<\/strong>, which has developed exceptional urban routes.<\/p><p data-start=\"782\" data-end=\"970\">Both during Soviet times and today, the city remains one of Armenia\u2019s most vibrant cultural centers. It stands out for its distinctive cuisine, humor, architecture, and traditional crafts.<\/p><p data-start=\"972\" data-end=\"1009\">During the city tour, I learned that:<\/p><ul data-start=\"1011\" data-end=\"1729\"><li data-section-id=\"mcfvfo\" data-start=\"1011\" data-end=\"1177\">The territory of Gyumri has been inhabited since ancient times. The earliest discovered and studied settlements date back to the beginning of the 3rd millennium BC.<\/li><li data-section-id=\"1b41yqz\" data-start=\"1179\" data-end=\"1536\">The first state formation created in the territory of present-day Gyumri is mentioned in a Urartian inscription from the 8th century BC, found not far from Marmashen. It refers to the area as <strong data-start=\"1373\" data-end=\"1387\">Iridaniuni<\/strong> and is identified with the ancient settlement of <strong data-start=\"1437\" data-end=\"1448\">Kumayri<\/strong>, located in the western part of the city, on the left bank of the Cherkez Gorge stream.<\/li><li data-section-id=\"yetxsh\" data-start=\"1538\" data-end=\"1626\">The city has a centuries-old culture stretching from ancient times to the present day.<\/li><li data-section-id=\"shxue9\" data-start=\"1628\" data-end=\"1729\">Gyumri later developed significantly in the 19th century when it became part of the Russian Empire.<\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"1731\" data-end=\"2035\">The heart of the city is the <strong data-start=\"1760\" data-end=\"1789\">Kumayri Historic District<\/strong>, a historical and architectural reserve where 19th-century buildings are located. These structures represent distinctive architectural styles and a complete urban environment, including churches, museums, residential houses, and other buildings.<\/p><h1 data-section-id=\"vnmktt\" data-start=\"2037\" data-end=\"2054\">YOU SHOULD KNOW<\/h1><p data-start=\"2056\" data-end=\"2236\">In 1836, the first urban plan of Gyumri was approved. According to this plan, the city was designed in a rectangular shape, with streets intersecting both lengthwise and widthwise.<\/p><p data-start=\"2238\" data-end=\"2455\">The same year, the construction of the fortress was completed. In 1837, Emperor Nicholas I visited Gyumri and founded the Russian church of Saint Alexandra inside the fortress. He also renamed Gyumri <strong data-start=\"2438\" data-end=\"2454\">Alexandropol<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"2457\" data-end=\"2793\">Between 1860 and 1880, houses built from red and black tuff became dominant. Thanks to the use of red tuff, building facades became more colorful. The combination of red and black tuff is unique to this period, as is the widespread use of the <strong data-start=\"2700\" data-end=\"2718\">\u201cGhaytan Darz\u201d<\/strong> masonry style, which involves clearly visible white joints between stones.<\/p><p data-start=\"2795\" data-end=\"3015\">After the 1880s, the use of red tuff sharply declined, while masonry with white joints continued alongside finely cut stonework. This period also marked the beginning of the construction of two-story apartment buildings.<\/p><p data-start=\"3017\" data-end=\"3208\">Starting from the 1890s, European (Russian) influences became noticeable. The elegant two- and three-story buildings that have survived until today were mainly constructed during this period.<\/p><p data-start=\"3210\" data-end=\"3449\">At the beginning of the 20th century, many building facades were painted, giving the city a unique variety of colors. Although most painted facades were later cleaned, some buildings still preserve subtle traces of those historical colors.<\/p><p data-start=\"3451\" data-end=\"3702\">Perhaps we should end the first day with only the city tour. Why? Because the information you receive while walking through the city needs time to settle. Craftsmen were organized into separate guilds.<\/p><p data-start=\"4031\" data-end=\"4234\">The origins of many family names were often connected to the craft that was the main occupation of that family. For example, <strong data-start=\"4156\" data-end=\"4167\">Tarzyan<\/strong> came from the word for tailor, and <strong data-start=\"4203\" data-end=\"4217\">Demirchyan<\/strong> from blacksmith.<\/p><p data-start=\"4236\" data-end=\"4429\">In the South Caucasus and beyond, the blacksmiths, coppersmiths, stonecutters, masons, jewelers, carpet makers, lace makers, and even confectioners and cooks of Alexandropol were highly valued.<\/p><p data-start=\"4431\" data-end=\"4553\">Many of these crafts continue to be appreciated today. Gyumri craftsmen are in high demand in Armenia, Russia, and Europe.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section in ancient Armenia.
